Smight - Road To Kandahar EP

  • Smight (Herbert Berkley) is a relatively new face to the production scene. After a couple of releases on Fade and Niche Records which received strong praise for the new man on the block, Smight aims to make another strong impact with this release on Music Is Freedom. Road to Kandahar EP is the name of the release and its a little beauty. On the A-side is the title track, “Road To Kandahar”. From the word go we are welcomed by a droning like baseline, deeply embedded but always keeping its presence noticed. While the deeper tones flow, a soothing circle of effects fill the air and then drown out, and as they do the wailing Indian vocals swirl around. The drums suddenly gain a little weight as the track climbs another step. A lovely breakdown enters deep into the track, as the vocal wails, baseline and effects all meet, then the drums as the track sizzles out to its conclusion. On the flip is the commemoratively titled “My Lovely Wife”. This production takes the broken beat approach, and introduces a twirling little sample early on, a sound that is a major part of the production throughout. Another funky baseline is launched which is then followed by a soft retro synth as the production hits its melodic heights. Midway into the track, a vocal chorus takes briefly takes before the track resumes its stunning flow of melancholic sounds and melodies. It truly is a great piece of work this. This is indeed a very strong release by Smight. 2 varied tracks that both take a different approach, but both receive the thumbs up. Music Is Freedom strike again with this release which can only act as a warning for the future of this promising label.
