Demokracy - Wintermute

  • Wintermute, a single from the recently released Double Star EP, is as scatty as the pan-European origins of the producers that feature on it. Demokracy themselves hail from a remote area of Russia. They often write tunes inspired by sci-fi literature, and "Wintermute," I'd surmise, is probably named after an artificial intelligence entity from Neuromancer, a seminal cyberpunk novel. That's because, like that genre, this single pairs clean digitalism with degradation and disorder. "Wintermute" drifts along in a creepy, morphine-induced daze, before a visceral bassline comes in and contorts like a broken robotic serpent. Bass Science, meanwhile, build ravey leads then drop them into a circuit bent mess of snarls, bloops and dings that have no business being alongside each other whatsoever. It's absolutely disgusting. Like the tracks themselves, the remixers stray restlessly. Montgomery Clunk delivers a deliriously insane two-step twitch-out, while Dies Irae propels static buzz with slow breakbeat kicks and splashing handclaps. It's all free and effortless—unforced innovation. They stumble wherever their scrambled navigation circuits take them.
