Mendes and Alcada - Night of the Bath

  • Portuguese producer Tiago Miranda has already appeared on labels like Hands of Time, Rong, Golf Channel, Disco Devil, Japan's Ene and Italians Do It Better, and he will soon be dropping a single for DFA. As a duo with fellow countryman Pedro Alcada, their productions so far emulate whatever label in which they appear. For their Claremont 56 single, "Coaster," they embraced Balearic pacing, breezy and gentle melodic underpinning and an ever-cresting swell of sound. So for their new single on Prins Thomas's sublabel, we get the duo's take on Norwegian cosmic disco on "Night of the Bath": loping bass and synth bass, unhurried live drums that lag just a hair behind the beat, celestial woodblock accentuation, a carefully unfurling melodic clean guitar line. If you said it was Prins Thomas's latest, I would be hard-pressed to disagree. There's more of an upbeat twang and tang to the guitar on "In the Morning," and a looser, more playful feel all around. Rattles, handclaps and off-kilter cymbal hits appear, weird jungle sounds bubble up at the edges, the synth lines shimmer and the low-end stomps. But with two wildly divergent singles so far, we're left to wonder: Which one reveals the duo's voice best?
