Soul Breed - We Play Music

  • Progressive house and nu-skool breaks seem to make interesting bed fellows and good releases. Singles such as McMillan & Tab's Lost World and a lot of stuff on TCR, 10 Kilo, Sinister and Marine Parade are starting to represent both the breaks side of the spectrum as well as the progressive four to the floor side. Navigation Records latest release, We Play Music by Soul Breed, is just that. Side A. Original Mix The original mix is a techy progressive house tune that has a very slow and dramatic build up at the beginning ie. add a new element to the mix every 4 or 8 bars, stir slowly and simmer for 8 minutes. It features some mirky overtones and some tribal percussion thrown in sparingly - quite a dark tune, and even made more so by the quirky vocal sample snippets. In the middle there is a breakdown which cuts out the beat then the tune builds up again, this time it gets slightly more uplifting adding in some punchy, adrenalin charging techy elements. A decent tune and one for the prog heads. Side B. Steve Gerrard vs. Russell Pearce Breaks "Wreckedangle" Remix The breaks remix is where it's at! A very tribal breaks affair using plenty of percussion and variations on the breakbeat pattern. Lots of tech elements to accompany the beat and the vocal sample from the original version. The drum solo in the middle absolutely kicks butt and it would sound awesome juggling 2 copies of the record just for that. This mix is for those into the hard nu-skool sound like Adam Freeland, Tayo and Rennie Pilgrem.
