- After several popular releases last year John Daly now returns to his own Feel Music with two tracks, ‘Move’ and ‘Oceans’, that each show off a very different style.
Daly is a pretty rare breed in today's scene, a producer who's just as likely to be found taking inspiration from whiter-than-white European film soundtracks as revered US artists like Theo Parrish or Ron Trent. This time around it seems he's looking to Europe. ‘Move’ is first up, a weighty slow motion disco track, with mournful synths panning slowly through the darkness. It wouldn't sound out of place in a Lindstrom or Prins Thomas DJ set.
’Oceans’, on the flipside, is much further away from the dancefloor, but nonetheless steals the show. Here Daly once again challenges some of the best film soundtracks of all time, with a disconnected and woozy ten minutes of bleak and melancholic Balearic melodies. On repeated listening, you wonder how somebody could compose something so vast in a place as mundane and small as an apartment or a studio. Yet it's also an isolated record, solipsistic in the sheer depth of the sounds on offer.
Electronic music producers often work alone. But few make music that sounds as alone as John Daly's does. Another great release for the man from a place Irish people call “The Rebel County".
