Kickflip - Freaky Funky Nasty/King Conga

  • Fat Records are certainly pulling out the releases and the new signings lately and new signing Kickflip is no exception. Hailing from Sheffield, Kickflip specialises in electro-infused breaks with lashings of funk and has seen releases and remixes put out on Choo Choo and Beat Industries from which the latter had him remixing Mara's 1974 which Friendly had selected for his Chew The Fat At The End CD from 2005. Side A. Freaky Funky Nasty Blurring the lines between breaks and dirty electro is Freaky, Funky and Nasty - most definitely the 3 best adjectives to describe this tune. Kicking off with a 4 to the floor-ish tech-funk beat, the tune incorporates a bouncy tech stab, big rumbling bassline, housey vocal stabs and a big growling male vocal which sounds like it takes its lead from Santos' 70s Sensation tune from 2003. During the massive breakdown in the middle, Kickflip strips it back to the bare elements of the big bassling and the bouncy tech stab before bringing back the frenzied madness. Side B. King Conga King Conga on the flip leans more towards the breakbeat side compared to Freaky, Funky and kicks off with a subtle, yet effective break and dubby stabs. It's not long before a massive latin influenced bassline and conga rhythm come into play. Look out for the big fade in's and build ups which cause devastating effects on the dancefloor! For those who dug, Madox's take on DJ Icey's Adventures In Conga on Mantra from mid-2005 will absolutely love this.
