  • NAPA, AKA Daniel Rincon, was once a key player in the Vancouver scene, running the Isla label and making music alongside D. Tiffany as Ambien Baby. Like so many other Rain City musicians, however, he packed up and headed east to Montreal a few years later, as the label transformed into a champion for a new generation of producers like Maara and PVAS. He's always been a vital behind-the-scenes figure and prolific collaborator, so it's an unexpected treat when he trots out a solo record. Cumbia Al Sol follows yet another move, this time to Mexico City, which seems to have expanded his palette, if this dubby cumbia EP is anything to go by. "Cumbia Al Sol"'s guaracha chug grounds the track, but across the top things get weird: glimmering chords fade into a distant Andean flute pattern only to reform as synths again. It's like tuning into some radio station where Jorge Reyes and Basic Channel are fighting over the dials.
