Boulderhead - Okii

  • The man who turned chicken soup into a surprise anthem produces another modular earworm.

  • Last year, Henry James, AKA Boulderhead, had an unlikely hit on Limousine Dream, and ID requests will tell you that the track, which lists the ingredients for chicken soup, inspired feverish devotion. As someone who's seen the tune played out, I can testify that "Bread Bread Noodles Spice," with its moreish bassline, modular synth work and goofy lyrics, ends with the entire club singing, "Chicken. Noodles. Rice. Yeah, nice." The lead tune from his follow-up, "Okii," repeats the formula for another big one. Over swung and punchy tech house drums, a sashaying bassline weaves in and out of a slightly melancholy synth line. But it wouldn't be a James track without some Siri-style magic over the top. Mark my words: punters will be repeating its refrain—"You okay? Yeah, okay. Okay"—in smoking areas for months to come.
