- OSSX is what you get when you put three of the best East Coast DJs in a room together and see what happens. A fitting addition to the four other projects they've released this year, their latest EP, WHO HAS THE TIME, transports you to the middle of a sweaty Brooklyn dance floor. It makes perfect sense if you've ever seen them spin. OSSX have a penchant for late '90s and early '00s throwbacks and giving them a second life by weaving them between the latest dance tunes. The new EP captures this fresh take on nostalgia and packages it perfectly into three club tools.
WHO HAS THE TIME plays out like how you'd expect OSSX to curate a set. "!!!" begins with a simple breakbeat backdrop and develops as oscillating synths, syncopated claps and a twinkling glockenspiel grab onto the melody. They stop for a moment, but only to make way for an interlude of airy vocal chops that float atop distant booms. The beat comes back in a crescendo to lead to the EP's titular song. "WHO HAS THE TIME" takes the beat from a certain Canadian rap star's song and turns it into the club tune that he desperately tried to make in a controversial 2022 dance record (I could name him, but honestly? Never mind). Here, you'll find all the quintessentials: shaking maracas, bouncy triplet drum kicks and producers who are actually from New Jersey. "OVER YOURSELF" follows a similar formula, taking a 1995 R&B classic and reimagining it into a blaring party tune. While it doesn't diverge from what they've already shown us, it's catchy and danceable, which is what we want from a club track.
Last year, OSSX told Resident Advisor that the group is rooted 80 percent in hip-hop and rap—this project solidifies that. Simple yet effective, WHO HAS THE TIME shows that OSSX understands exactly what the dance floor wants, and that they can deliver it effortlessly.
