- Peverelist's first EP in five years is both a big deal and pretty low-key—four cuts of casually inventive broken techno without proper track titles. But "Pulse I" just works, with those classic percussive clacks and woodblock-style percussion that feels like it's swinging suspended in midair. The Bristol producer slowly introduces skeletal new elements until it blurs into an impressionistic swirl, complete with a blast of primary colour thanks to a synth he introduces in the second half. Yep—this is Peverelist.
While the music is familiar, each iteration of "Pulse" brings Peverelist further to the outer reaches of his sound. The way the hi-hats knock against the rest of the groove on "Pulse II" creates the kind of zero-gravity atmosphere of the most psychedelic of Pev tracks, while "Pulse III" introduces a techno kick-hat pattern to straighten things out a little, like a long-lost cousin of his Hessle Audio work. The big deal here is "Pulse IV," with its straight-up house rhythm and an effortless, almost soulful swing that contrasts with the rigidity of the rest of the work. It's a 12-inch that both underlines the appeal of his one-of-a-kind sound and gently expands it at the same time.
