  • With a record produced by Leon Vynehall on the way and a style that blends drill with elements of jazz, classical and electronic music, Kam-Bu is set to reach new heights this year. "Black On Black" opens with skank-worthy sampling and a heavy drum pattern that pieces together beneath the first verse like a puzzle, striking with waves of deep sub-bass as it builds towards the chorus: “Black on black: that's fam / Windrush: Grandad's clan / Flats on flats: that's stacks." His flow and lyricism—inspired by activist Fela Kuti’s repetitive marching songs—take the negative connotations of "black-on black" and turn them into statements of empowerment and unity. Towards the end, heart-wrenching strings and a jazzy brass arrangement mirror the passion, pride and weight of Kam-Bu’s words. With emphatic delivery and cinematic sonics, "Black On Black" calls on us to reflect on our ways of being.
