Smithmonger vs Kobi - Grizzle

  • Bristol breakbeat label Vertical Sound are getting the attention they deserve with artists on the roster spreading their wings recording for respected labels such as Supercharged, Drum'n'breaks, MBN and others. Vertical Sound too is increasing its artist roster with a new release courtesy of Smithmonger and Kobi with remix duties provided by Sokolov Sounds' Vlad and Ardisson. Side V. Original Grizzle started life as a production by newcomer Kobi. Smithmonger happened upon the track and wanted to be a part of it and his influence can easily be heard with the charged up break and tough, growling bassline that he has made his trademark in tunes like Here's The Jam, Afro Lava Lamp and his remix of Superstyle Deluxe's Step It Up. Grizzle incorporates a cut up hip hop sample and a sci-fi female vocal. Add to this cleverly placed hoovers and an awesome beatdrop where the hip hop sample takes control and Grizzle is one heavy tune, fo shizzle! Side S. Vlad And Ardisson Remix Sokolov Sounds' Vlad and Ardisson take the original tune and beef up the bass and a big dash of electro, giving it a much fuller sound. The beat in some ways leans towards booty breaks (especially during the beginning) and Vlad and Ardisson drop a big electro lick on top of the tune. During the breakdown the beat goes into halftime as they build up for a massive climax. Good to see Vertical Sound tackling on a different sound and hopefully they can further increase their roster of artists.
