Introspective - Skanky

  • Mike ‘Introspective’ Hulme is rapidly making a name for himself amongst breaks circles with a warm big room breaks sound. Recent productions out through the Sinister label ‘Slavery Incorporated’ and Splitloop’s ‘Klaxx Remix’ have showcased his effortless development of a sound which requires a loud-crisp system to appreciate the level range and his next offering ‘Skanky’ continues in the same theme. The original sees rolling acidic basslines firmly in place which when played loud seem to only further enhance their dirty feel. The breakdown offers some respite, but Hulme’s percussion soon takes over and with it the subtle horizontal clenched fist pump that signifies a track designed to get you moving. The Remix comes courtesy of Irish outfit Splitloop, who must have dropped the original into a vat of Jerk Chicken at the recent Nottinghill Carnival. Reggae flavours aplenty, this little corker keeps the track dark, dirty to begin with before suitably tasty Caribbean vibes can’t help add a touch of funk to this release. For a big room influence I prefer the original, but credit to the Splitloop boys for offering a re-work that actually offers something different. 16 releases into the Sinister label and they continue to keep things fresh. Nice work.
