Two Shell - N35

  • A welcome bit of post-dubstep throwback.

  • Remember when a good vocal chop was all it took to make a world-conquering hit? UK duo Two Shell do, and with "N35" they've cooked up a banger that would have ruled the DJ charts back in 2010. Where last year's debut EP on Livity Sound explored broken beat and early garage, here they dive into post-dubstep glory days with a twitchy drum patter and a Teedra Moses cut-up to die for. The vocal on "N35" is twisted into a wordless hook that sounds alien but feels universal, as the snare-hat pattern ricochets from either side of the stereo spectrum. It's full of sounds to tickle your ear, and the wobbling sub-bass seals the deal, nailing the bassy oomph that defined old hits like Deadboy's "Heartbreaker" or Joy Orbison's "Hyph Mngo." The flipside—with its choral vocals, roughshod drums and M.I.A. sample—is no slouch, but this release is all about the A-side, which could be one of the first hits of the livestream era.
