  • Frankfurt's Oliver Hafenbauer has long championed his hometown scene as a booker and promoter at the famed Robert Johnson nightclub as well as through his record labels. One of them, Die Orakel, recently launched a 12-inch series with three bleep-influenced white labels from local producers, the second of which features Benjamin Milz, AKA Hitekjazz and M&H Syndicate. The two tracks on his elegant contribution use similar palates of soft sine wave-like keys and pads, acid squelches and grainy breakbeat samples. They work together to present a mood of pristine, groovy introspection with a touch of sultriness. The A-side earns its position with more assertive melodic elements than its tooly, rolling-on-and-on brother. A moody pad and arpish pluck both imply chord progressions that drive the songwriting forward, so it feels like the track is building to something. The payoff turns out to be a slightly chopped-up breakbeat, which fits naturally in the track and adds an extra layer of groove—but it also adds a very familiar external agent into Milz's sonic universe. His own simple yet evocative ideas, like the loping rhythms and floating-cloud bloop sequences, make for a strong and understated 12-inch.
