Kumail - Yasmin

  • Smooth, vocal-laced downtempo from Mumbai.

  • Kumail Hamid, a Mumbai-based musician who blends soul, jazz and funk, achieved quick success. A modest DJ career soon opened the door for live performances, where he plays drums and occasionally sings while touring India with stops at the country's biggest music festivals. On Yasmin, Kumail sounds more comfortable with his own voice. It's more pronounced and played with, as with the hook on "Ain't In My Head," which he repeats, warps and modulates until it's the song's centerpiece. There are also brighter moments like "Obota," which samples the Gabonese composer Pierre Akendengue, layering Akendengue's guitar into a slow beat that hangs between spaced out open hi-hats. Yasmin is a collection of ideas that move slowly—but steadily.
