Jock Club - Morphism

  • Andrew Flores, AKA Jock Club, is one of Ascetic House's signature artists. His rubbed-raw house and techno nicely represents the Arizona label, having released a staggering amount of music through it so far. Flores appears on Ascetic House's first vinyl project, the simultaneous release of eight records from artists like Granite Mask, Orgonon Pit and Somali Extract. A collection of no-nonsense dance tracks, Morphism hints that the move into vinyl might see the label shifting towards more traditional dance floor sounds. Two of Morphism's four tracks don't have melodies. "Shock Pressure" and "Locked Out (Jacked Up Mixx)" are aggressive drum workouts that feel as if they are lunging at you. Instead of pads or chords, Flores wrings texture out of percussion—a flanger on "Locked Out," some fun spatial tricks with rattling tribal percussion on "Shock Pressure." The other tunes are more conventional but no less satisfying. "Morphose" is a workhorse dub techno track with a crunchy kick drum, while the jacking "Head Ache," the EP's most brutal moment, spins itself into a tizzy with feverish drum programming and a deliriously repetitive bassline. All four tracks on Morphism are dead simple, busted out with a simplicity that shouldn't be confused with inexperience. Flores knows what DJs need, and his first vinyl release for Ascetic House proves he can deliver it without sacrificing the label's rough-around-the-edges spirit.
