Sprayhead – Something Tough/Clear Cut

  • Sprayhead is the brainchild of John Carroll who has been producing music for quite a while. Something Tough/Clear Cut is his first venture into breakbeat and is also his first release on Boombox Records. Side A. Something Tough An obvious title to the track, Something Tough describes exactly that – this tune is something tough. Starting off with stirring strings, the track quickly builds up pounding the speakers and bassbins to reveal a dark and dirty bassline – only getting dirtier and dirtier as the tune progresses. Stomping breaks lay down the beats making Something Tough perfect for peak time dancefloors. Side B. Clear Cut Leaning towards the funkier end of the breakbeat spectrum is Clear Cut featuring an intro that could probably be described as a sweet, melodic harpsichord loop whilst a lone cymbal accompanies it for rhythm. Sprayhead winds it all down and introduces yet another heavy bassline and a funky house/breaks crossover beat that would fit in with Meat Katie, Lee Coombs and Elite Force productions. The addition of keys, bass stabs and another male vocal sample give the track nice variations on top. A pretty good debut breaks release offering something for both hard and funky palettes.
