Dan Shake ‎- Out Of Sight

  • Daniel Rose-Weir raised eyebrows last year by becoming the first non-Detroiter to appear on Moodymann's Mahogani Music. But 3am Jazz Club—a throbbing, Rhodes-packed affair—ultimately made sense due to its neat stylistic parallels with Moodymann himself. Dan Shake's latest stop-off is Black Acre, a UK label that's released the hip-hop experimentalism of Blue Daisy and the footwork/bass sketches of Clap! Clap! in the recent past. It's far too early to say that "3am Jazz Club" was a fluke, but both "Out Of Sight" and "Traders II" lack its edge. The former bumps along at a brisk enough tempo, but despite its throbbing Rhodes and live percussion it lacks its predecessor's smoky presence. While "Traders II" fares somewhat better, courtesy of squelchy bass patterns and noodly sax, it's still more perfunctory than inspired.
