Ubre Blanca - Terminal Island

  • Ubre Blanca are Glasgow pair Joel Stone, formerly of Shitdisco, and Andy Brown, current drummer with Remember Remember and formerly of noise-rockers Divorce. The idea behind Ubre Blanca is the duo get to explore their shared love for synth music and film soundtracks from the 1970s and 80s, and Terminal Island finds them doing so with glee and skill. Each track here comes from a slightly different corner of this general form. Where the sparkling synth melody and nudging bass pattern of "Red Skies" channels cop-show theme tunes, "World On A Wire"'s rueful keys have a touch of the Drive soundtrack to them. Elsewhere, the Tangerine Dream-like opener, "Escape From Terminal Island," buzzes along on a Blade Runner bassline while militaristic snares and spiralling keys illuminate its foreground. "Muscles And Jungle" may be the pick of the bunch. It lives up to its name thanks to a gloriously flexing bassline, swooning keys and flamboyant percussion.
