Joe Rolét - GreenAid EP

  • Planetary Notions is a new label from London, headed up, according to a press release, by "a trio of music aficionados with years of industry experience behind them." One of the three, local lad Joe Rolét, steps up for the first offering, which is also his production debut. True to the label's name, the GreenAid EP presents two takes on cosmic, club-ready house and techno. The title track leads with a punchy package of coarse claps, hefty kicks and a thick, tumbling bassline. A set of spacey synths gives the mix a severe edge, while a child's calls, darkened pads and cosmic swirls combine to make an energetic whole. "SunStone" is very much cut from the same cloth. It's a pumping dance floor banger that takes a collage-like approach. This time, Rolét drags a low bassline over misty pads, vocal snatches and echoey bubbles. There's a lot going on in these records, and in less able hands they could easily feel cluttered and overwhelming. But thanks to its strong production values and instinctive sense of structure, the GreenAid EP pulls it off.
