- The Russian duo Love Cult's Know EP, the follow-up to their debut LP on Public Information, is a series of club miniatures that draw heavily on drone and noise. By folding club genre studies into a sludgy palette, its four tracks push and pull with notions of what dance music can be.
Drone and techno collide on "Mise En Abyme," with great shuddering tonal walls providing a dread foil to the sparse percussive clatter, but pitch-bent vocal snippets interfere with the foreboding atmosphere, making the track feel dated. More successful is "Lust Undone," which sounds like footwork decaying from the inside. Opening with a queasy drum pattern, the addition of ear-splitting trebly noise and eerie, stuttering vocals transforms it into something else entirely. On "My Boy" the spectral vocals resurface, but here they're wispy veils that Love Cult pair with a lumbering 2-step rhythm. On "It's True," the record's standout, more of those frail vocals and wafting organs offset the pitch-black dubstep bassline and thick blasts of noise.
