Rumah & Progression - Chance Meeting

  • Whatever the circumstances of the encounter referred to on this inaugural EP for London label Nineteen89, it seems less important to know how Rumah and Progression came together than when. The title track gives a cursory nod to the dub techno/breaks/dubstep crossovers of 2008/09, an avenue well-trodden by the likes of Martyn and 2562. Despite the provenance of its influences, "Chance Meeting" doesn't withstand such lofty comparisons for long. For one thing, the bassline dominates proceedings so much that the high-end elements of the track seem more peripheral than complementary, yet another example of the increasingly common over-reliance on rhythmic tropes among young UK producers that verges on the pathological. "E1" is no less stern in its approach, but its serpentine acid line, splashing handclaps and half-step rhythm contrive to make a better stab of distilling a blend of dance music touchstones that, in time, an up-and-coming producer like Rumah will learn to handle with more nous.
