Till Kruger - Deciduous

  • Back for the third EP of his career—and second this year—Stuttgart-based Till Krüger continues revelling in the European interpretation of Detroit techno. "Deciduous" gets underway with a purring low-end and firm hand claps. Two lengthy breakdowns are strung at each end of the track, Krüger's clean melodic lines percolating through them like steam. Sky-sized pads roll inexorably from end to end, shifting gently up and down while the central motif loops endlessly, unchanged. It's definitely hypnotic, but feels less distinctive than some of his previous work. "Galaxy 909" is more immediately arresting, perhaps due to its rib-jabbing hi-hat and metallic shaker. As much as anything though, it's a shining example of Krüger's remarkable ability to interlace disparate melodies. At its height, "Galaxy 909" has four of them. A pinging synth and rolling, spherical arpeggio make up the intensely melodic lead. Hovering in the background, a serrated pad seems to stutter at high speed without ever breaking completely, an effect which is new to me. Last, a second, soaring pad fills out what little space is left. Any producer can stuff a track full of bright melodies, of course. Not many can make them work in such elegant a fashion though.
