Benjamin Brunn - Dust EP

  • Though Benjamin Brunn has been active for over a decade, many listeners may have made first contact with the producer by way of his stunning 2008 album with Move D, Songs from the Beehive. That album was all kinds of innovative, but Brunn isn't a producer I turn to for the kind of out-there house that record ushered forth (or that Move D continues to make a name for himself with); he's got plenty of weirdness in him, but I wouldn't really call him transgressive. And that's what you get with Benjamin Brunn's latest, the Dust for the under-the-radar Ashes label: it's certainly more than weirdness for weirdness's sake, but it's not exactly a hard-hitting headtrip, either. "I Took Her Out for a 707" features ebullient drum machines that sound like they're tickling its wild melody into the wacky leaps it's taking."Neonlight Time" has similarly strong forward motion, and the track feels like it can't quite believe the colors it's uncovering as it woozily pushes along. "Don't Cry for Yesterday" and "Pola" both slow things down a bit, and the bigger pocket is less flattering than Brunn may have hoped: they feel more expansive, but the sound design looks a bit timid all alone on such a wide stage.
