Dave Vega - Exone 10

  • Dave Vega's previous outing on Exone, the trippy "The Woes Of Me"—with Seth Troxler mumbling over the top—struck a nice balance between psychedelic pop and chasmic uncertainty. Exone 10 neither represents a radical departure nor more of the same. It does in part, however, emphasise a spaced-out sensibility that promises much from the Robert Johnson resident. "Missing Postcard from Venice" is a tune that exudes joy, bouncing along rapidly, all liquid stabs and steam hammers. It's vaguely reminiscent of the sound Prologue have been pushing, but sunny side up. Marc Houle offers a deconstructed remix which robs the track of its energy, replacing it with a more sombre tone. Synths wail over a desolate percussive backdrop while a few synthetic squelches remain. "Hell Stays Open All Night," meanwhile, is all threatening low-end, the insistence of which is emphasised by insect percussion over which a single, stark beat is applied. Three very different pieces all varying in frequency and intent, each with something to say.
