Daddykshun - Learn to Love

  • The original version of "Learn to Love" was supposedly thrust into the hands of Ratio?music's Melon by two old acquaintances, who by some cruel twist of fate had become heroin-addicted residents of Amsterdam's canal-crossed streets. Now, after a year of increasingly positive responses when he dropped the record in his sets, Melon has decided to share both the track and the story. "Learn to Love" is—like the generous Amsterdam avenues which this pair of lost souls supposedly spent many a night shuffling—beautifully sparse. Its soft keys are a constant presence, but they only act as a backdrop for the shimmering bubbles and encouraging claps that offer much of its substance. Here, the space afforded individual elements is as important as the elements themselves. Doc Martin tightens things up considerably, adding a huge bassline which dominates. Muddier and much more claustrophobic, it works better as a club track, but leaves behind a lot of what makes the original so attractive. Tom Ruijg, meanwhile, loops the keys and goes snare-crazy, which is all well and good...but I like my space.
