Kamo - Set the Routine

  • Kamo was a Georgian revolutionary and companion to Stalin known for his mastery of disguise, something you could also attribute to Liam and Niall Cameron for their work so far: it's refused to be openly identified, instead mixing Fly Lo syncopation with Harmonic 313 electronics and plenty of other stuff in between. For Trendy Mullet, they switch it up again, opting for a sample-heavy and digital house sound. "Shoot Your Shot" is a suitably joyous record with hip-swinging claps, finger-plucked bass notes for extra funk and selective vocal cries which tie the whole thing together, whereas "Set the Routine" is about darting little keys, bright tonal colours and warm subby stabs. Its bulbous rhythm is half pissed (augmented by some rising hiccup-like sounds) and with that comes a woozily seductive charm which softens the pixelated aesthetics overall. Luke Solomon's remix ducks and dives just as much, but never strays too far from a bobbling bassline, and Manuel Sahagun replaces the late-afternoon loucheness of "Shoot" with a more streamlined and dance floor sensibility. Importantly, though, Kamo's sonic quirks still thrive throughout.
