Manuel Tur - Foolin'

  • Manuel Tur has always been the most cheerful of the Mild Pitch crew. Take a listen to early work on labels like So Sound and Smokestack, and you'll hear a funky producer that stands apart from Dplay and Langenberg's more refined aesthetic. "Foolin'," Tur's latest for Delusions of Grandeur, will do nothing to dispel such perceptions. It has the more modern drive that characterizes Tur's productions, but slots neatly next to "Most of This Moment" as a big room tune that rides the thin line between Kraft and gouda. "Foolin'"'s got a better (uncredited) vocal than its Freerange predecessor, and it makes all the difference. The wandering bassline that seems to come back to drive its point home helps too. Tur gets pensive on the flip with "The Traveller," and sounds a bit like Culoe De Song in the process. He thankfully doesn't go full tribal with a chanting vocal, instead opting for a horn fanfare. Strangely, though, it's somehow too full of itself and not full enough simultaneously. On this one, stick with the cheese—for better or worse.
