VC - The Trick

  • Even with skweee's often surprisingly virile take on cartoonish hip-hop, sometimes it feels as if they're overcompensating for the cutesy image the genre's name evokes. Brighton-based Donky Pitch is one of the few non-Scandinavian outlets for the stuff, and its third release from Helsinki producer V.C. carries some of the heaviest skweee this side of Melkeveien. Over six meaty tracks, V.C. finds a lot of variety in the template, taking the genre far away from its hip-hop roots. The EP's most impressive track "123" is practically a slow jam, gorgeous synth feelers crawling out from underneath steamy chords and twinkling arpeggios. If there's one thing that separates V.C. from his skweee brethren, it's those synths—voluptuous and powerful, they define each track, whether it's the John Paul Jones-calibre melodies on "Superfluid" ("All My Love," anyone?) or the jerky bursts on "Silly Dope." On "Kind of Bad" they wriggle over a distorted hobble that recalls prime Joker material, and on "The Trick" they're squeezed until they split off into fragments. He even brings in some horns on closer "Deuce Dues," rounding off a solid EP from this producer who so effortlessly builds dense but uncluttered tracks that swirl and wrap around into a synthetic tapestry of gaudy polyester and rough nylon.
