Santorini - Scirocco EP

  • The impressive thing about the title track from Santorini's new outing on The Flame Recordings is how alive it sounds, especially given the distinctly unorganic qualities of its individual parts. It should, by rights, be bland and uninspiring. Instead, chattering hi-hats that sound like a troupe of insects franticly chewing their way through speaker cables, and synth stabs that shimmer and contort like the frame of a steel drum, give it an pleasantly accessible natural feel. "Irene's Groove" kicks off with what sounds like a dawn chorus of clicking arthropods, but quickly becomes dominated by a juddering staccato beat and overused and underdeveloped hats. "Summer in Salento" fares better, much better in fact; the sparse piano lead and live-sounding chords add fragility to a powerful bassline. It's hardly the kind of music you would immediately associate with a heady few weeks spent sipping wine (no doubt) in "heel of Italy," but you can see what he's getting at.
