Erdbeerschnitzel - Always Remain

  • "I just happened to take that name some years ago when real name minimal techno artists were all about," Tim Keiling recently told Little White Earbuds when asked about his moniker Erdbeerschnitzel. It's easy to see why the German would want to distinguish himself from the minimal pack: bright, brash and bursting with color, his music is anything but austere. But as he meanders into funky, LA-inflected pop on "Always Remain," his latest for 3rd Strike, you may wonder if he's actually at his best and most original when he flirts with more straightlaced dance fare. Which isn't to say that he doesn't wear chunky beats very well. "Always Remain" is joyous, letting The Drifter's laidback vocals slide over slippery drumming and prickly synthesizers. The syrupy "A Merchant's Lament" sounds a bit like the head-nodders Lone used to make, Dilla and FlyLo loom as large as IDM. "Devotion," edging a little further into house territory, comes off as a more intricate and far less morose take on FaltyDL's "Voyager." It's "Same Same," though, that really shines on this EP: quicker (if you'd call 115 BPM quick) and more plotted-out than the other tracks on offer, it's a track that sneaks up on you, keeping its best vibes close to the chest until the final half. It's nowhere close to "real name minimal," but Erdbeerschnitzel sounds too good ramping up a dance party to move entirely away from four-to-the-floor.
