Class B Band - Strange Wolves EP

  • Class B Band's follow up to their debut album Movie T on Wagon Repair fits well into the MFR canon, with its vocal orientation and glam inflections. Such blitheness might be expected from a duo consisting of a beatboxer and one-half of Dollz at Play. Their particular angle to this sound on Strange Wolves, though, is a dark electro funk that teeters on the edge of chaos, while keeping itself together just enough for a full attack. The A side is charging and swings aggressively, with rapid-fire handclap fills—but it's also drenched in otherworldliness and soaring chord progressions. For those who don't celebrate flamboyance with as much gusto as the lyricist, it's easy to put your gripes to one side and still get swept up. Darabi, meanwhile, produce a powerful slowed down interpretation, with washes of menacing synths and phased-out vocals. Although they're newcomers, their releases thus far have been serious and rather excellent, and this follows suit. Dead Seal's remix and "Chords and Knives" lay the kick down more firmly, with the first being a fairly straight re-fix and the second having insidious vocals and synth fuzz. Moodiness never sounded this kitsch, and vice-versa.
