Ian Pooley - Groove Me (The Remixes)

  • Ian Pooley recruits three solid names to remix his own "Groove Me" and "Nightwalker" tracks, but it's recent RA podcaster Ed Davenport who comes off best. Again proving himself to be someone with a wide and well-defined palette, the Berlin-based Brit turns in a bass music aligned "rethink" and a more techno leaning "fixation" version of "Nightwalker." The former has a stuttering, swinging kick drum and little else at the start: It's economical but efficient in marking out vast, warm analogue spaces in which vocal shadows lurk before echoing, reverbing claps and percussion add some paunch to the punch. The latter, meanwhile, is just as weighty but focuses more on deep, subliminal 4/4 repetition. Some Plastikman-styled snappy snares splatter the midpoint, but do little to deter you from marching onward with your eyes facing down. Elsewhere, Spencer Parker favours loose percussion, using lapping basslines and a slowly unfurling sense of synth euphoria for his elongated take on "Groove," while Matt Dekay's dub version is laced with jazzy motifs. Dekay appears again—this time alongside Lee Burridge—for a pleasant tech excursion as well. Next to Davenport's on-point and no-nonsense weapons, though, they all seem rather pale.
