Visionist / Lorca - W.M.I.D / Hold Back

  • Bristol young blood Vessel set the bar high for Throwing Snow's fledgling London imprint left_blank, which issued a well-crafted debut back in May of genre-eschewing delight. For the label's second release Snow sets his sights a little closer to home, delivering a taut package from London-based Visionist and Brighton-hailing Lorca on a succinct and funky 808 tip. Visionist serves up a sweet and sour dish of tangy drums and cushioned pads with "W.M.I.D," which is rolled along by a flavoursome hybrid of foot and funk. Lorca's "Hold Back" mellows the vibe, stripping out the percussion and dousing it with minor, churchy chimes to leave a gentle sub pattering through the aural vapour. Montreal-based Valentin Stip steers it towards Groove Armada's spot by the river with a warped trombone sample and additional keys. It never reaches sand dunes and salty air, slipping instead into a lucid dubby dream of its own. Lorca and Visionist's "Slapstickk" is the standout, throwing all of the above into a blender along with a spicy synth to produce a rumbling bassy floor shuffler, tiered with 808 kick and just a splash of soul. Another solid effort from Left Blank, an imprint to watch as it matures.
