Call Super - Staircase EP

  • Some producers take their time digging an ever more elaborate hole, but Berlin duo JR Seaton and Matt Waites' first EP together does more moving outward. Call Super (nicely truncated name) do so slowly, almost imperceptibly. One minute Staircase's opening track, "And It Was!," sounds like more muttered vocals over hesitant bleeps, the next the drums are jacking forcefully and the bleeps are going berserk. "Nosebleed," which follows, isn't that antic, but it doesn't need to be. There are lots of drop-ins and new details surface all the time; why hurry? This one ends with acidic synths but not 303 jabber, and it stops in what could have been the middle, a nice touch. Call Super's own "Wire Remix" of the track, which ends the EP, is even mellower-it could have been titled the "Ibiza Mix." "Timora" is about one-third foray into dubstep and the rest a tough techno four with gliding synths to match. On a screen, it's a formula, but in the air it's not-it might be the catchiest tune here, actually, as the tiny discrete synth lines pile up into one another to create a lovely arc. Objekt reworks "Timora" into straight-up electro, with handclaps boxy enough to kill a turtle with and a synth overlay so high-pitched you could use it to lance a goblin.
