Speedy J - Shoegaze EP

  • Filling slot number 16 on his own label, Jochem Paap returns to ideas already covered somewhat by last year's Armstrong. That is, intense attention to sub bass, grimy, drone-influenced sounds and extreme repetition. The difference is that Paap's version of "Shoegaze" is a far less visceral experience. It's led by a throbbing whine, one which is stuck halfway between electric golf cart and vacuum cleaner. Crackling, dusty percussion ambles alongside, with mammoth sub bass cradling the two in plush but mighty folds. As the mix name—"Out of Focus"—implies, the track relies on a series of different lenses, bringing bleary elements back to the fore before shoving them downwards or sideways to sharpen their competitors once again. A frequent appearance alongside Paap, Edit Select's Dub is a more immediate piece. That's an unsurprising fact, as it introduces a majority of its content within the first instant. Thus, interest is generated by painstakingly modifying things incrementally, at least until the mid-section's haunting pads take over. It's a far more single-minded take, too. Beefy kicks are slathered with hazy hi-hats and a slender bassline, yet the three manage to create a tangible sense of movement. This is trance music in the proper sense of the word; whirling loops that suck the mind deep down inside them.
