Steve Rachmad - Fruit Of The Room

  • Darko Esser and Ger Laning's Wolfskuil Records is an imprint that, so far, hasn't found much of a place in the bags of techno purists, but Steve Rachmad's most recent effort has a shot at changing that. The Dutchman's strength has always been an ability to craft legitimate peak-time cuts—not fillers or tools—something he's largely built his reputation upon as a producer. Fruit Of The Room sees him continue that trend. The title track kicks the release off with a raw and hazy midrange, which chugs along until its paired with an upfront six-pronged bassline, ultimately creating a warm backdrop to Rachmad's acid-tinged synth work. It's been made for heaving dance floors, but its bass and daring percussion sets it apart from your straightforward peak-time fare. Flip the vinyl over, however, and it's a different story. "Flute of the Loom" is basically the A-side's younger sibling, lifted from the same palette but lacking in strength. While it's a track with personality, don't expect this one to come close to matching the impact of its predecessor. Note to other labels: if you're lacking in Berghain airtime, give Steve Rachmad a call.
