Aeroplane - My Enemy

  • "My Enemy" was one of the better tracks from Aeroplane's full-length last year. It was also one of the tracks that sounded most like Aeroplane: An open-throated nu-disco jam where everything is entirely obvious, but it doesn't care. "My Enemy" does care. A bit. There's a point in the song where it feels like it should elevate higher, but just falls back and repeats, somewhat shyly. Generally, though, it's pretty good; a chugging disco bassline, bombastic synth and string and a wistful, reverbed middle eight guitar solo that might just have David Gilmour fans reaching for their air Strats. Rex the Dog leaves behind any coyness in turning the track into a dyno-tuned monster, diamond-cut in sound with a punching drum track and throbbing electro bass. Alternate sections and arpeggios flow upwards into a break that capitalises on the grandiosity with huge, bashing snare rolls, before flooring you on the drop. This might all be too much for some, but it distils and fortifies all the right bits in all the right ways. Green Velvet, meanwhile, changes things more considerably. He puts aside any chord changes, leaving only a pulsing low range monotone throb, cycling synths and simple rhythmic patterns. Variations are kept largely to linear additions and subtractions. On its own, it doesn't do too much—but it's heavy with a spring-loaded tension that suggests the set's just about to get serious.
