Vessel - Nylon Sunset

  • The endless assembly line of Bristol-based producers spits out its latest creation in the form of house-oriented Vessel, and his first release is also the first from new label left_blank. Regardless, A-side "Ton" isn't the best way to get to know Vessel: its broken beat structure skews it a little too close to faceless garage, as do its antiseptic handclaps and snares. There's a quirky and intriguing exaggeration to the way he programs the percussion, however, one that brings the other tracks to life. It's those other tracks that are more representative of what he's best at: slow, graceful house music. The groove on "Blushes" is so elegant it practically curtseys with each careful dip, and the track's use of slightly swung analogue drum machines is balanced by a rather modern coat of techy wax polish. "Nylon Sunset" breaks up a spooky string sample and sprinkles the crumbs over another shattered house rhythmïcomplete with handcranked percussionobut this time it works much better than "Ton," retaining the groggy dragging-feet feeling of some of the best of this stuff. Peverelist is drafted in for a remix of "Sunset," a savvy double-edged sword in that it simply outshines everything else on the EP. The fellow Bristolian pulls the track down into the swamp, forcing a raucous and jacking beat to wade through the goop like a runner sprinting in place. While the best thing on Vessel's debut EP might be a remix, there's still a lot here to get excited about.
