Worthy & Yankee Zulu - Digital Aboriginal

  • Not many people these days will admit to having been into breaks. Most who were, though, will probably remember a label called Finger Lickin', who were pretty central to the whole thing. I never saw myself as particularly aligned with their fun fun fun vibe, but nonetheless I found myself wanting to buy a lot of what they released. It felt like just the thing to drop at a party, with just enough dirt to be taken seriously. Digital Aboriginal reminds me a lot of that label. This is the kind of thing Claude VonStroke would go for: chunky, ass-quaking and with liberal slatherings of humour. (Anabatic head Worthy was a co-founder of Dirtybird, in fact). Screwloose noises scramble over boompty tribalism and sub kicks, with absurd levels of syncopation. The Aboriginal of the title refers to the vocal, a daft skit in, er, Aborigine (I'm assuming) that's layered and effected and bounds around the whole track. It's a blast, for sure. Like most ex-breaks fans, though, I'm getting older and grumpier, and I like to stroke my chin at least a tiny bit these days. The remixes skip and groove in a similar manner to one another, ironing out the wild bounciness of the original. Joyce Muniz stutters the vocal, introduces a few neat fills and generally displays tight production. Idiotproof, meanwhile, tunes it more directly towards effectiveness, but both are less adventurous than the original. The bumping party vibez are still very much present, but they damp down the good bits and replace what's taken out with pretty standard stuff.
