Super Flu - Euterpeh

  • In case you don't already know, Super Flu are bloody ace. It's not my opinion, it's fact. Sure, at times in the past I've come across unimaginative tracks of theirs that I've discarded in disappointment, but there's a couple of reasons why I can easily forgive them. Firstly, "Rattelschneck," one of my favourite tunes of the last few years. Secondly, I get the impression that they're really coming into their own at the moment. The artwork and sounds on both Heimatmelodien, their debut album last year, and this "mini-album," take their best idiosyncrasies—playfulness and directness—and run with them. "Hallo Halle" blankets you in warm bubbles, but builds a strong foundation with solid tech underneath. "Ueber" has a minimal groove that's precise, tight, and swung by a plethora of insectoid chops. It's the kind of vibrant, punchy tech house that they excel in. Alongside these rhythms, you have the kind of gentle melodies that soften the soul. Sometimes, they're shining through the cracks in between the drum hits; other times, they're enveloping the track. The best bits, though, are the more emotional ones, like in the soft, floating washes of "Jasch" and "Takk Pony." The best thing here, "Pony," pumps and clacks, as joyful fanfares build, plateau in glorious colour and then fall off, only for it to happen again and again. Superb.
