- Despite more than ten years in the studio, the name Matt Flores is unlikely to arouse much in many people. Like countless other producers, he's consistently had the unhappy honour of creating filler material for DJs, rather than their most-loved records.
As with last year's Floating EP, Water on the Moon finds the Dusseldorf resident once again utilising female vocal stabs and a stripped aesthetic. The title track feels more like progressive house than its deep cousin, with one-two hi-hats providing swing and a diminuitive, plodding bassline lurking underneath. Things slowly unwind via a highly repetitive keyboard loop and doleful flute line, which chimes in at opportune times. Slower "Continuum" follows a similar theme, though here, the feminine moan sample is replaced with an emphatic "yeah," and the keyboards with a fuzzy, sweeping pad.
While both of Flores' originals are functional, it's Session Victim—last year the subject of an RA feature—who bring the release to life. In their hands, the blunt keyboard loop becomes gentler and less intrusive, while something like a toy helicopter whirrs its way up and down the mix. Unfortunately, this version is probably the only one that'll be remembered in a year's time, too.
