Auntie Flo - Goan Highlife

  • Influenced by Goa ancestry and brought up in Scotland's rainswept school of electronic music hard knocks, Auntie Flo is the familiar yet exotic production alias of Glasgow DJ Brian d'Souza. Involved in several established Glasgow and Edinburgh club nights, d'Souza is perhaps best known to clued-up clubgoers as one of the first people to book Ricardo Villalobos on British shores. But d'Souza is all over the place in a good way, whether it's crafting a Matias Aguayo-approved Cïmeme mixtape, playing a live set that included a goldfish bowl in a forest or recently warming up with a set of his own material (minus goldfish bowl, sadly) prior to Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti. Clearly d'Souza has things to say. And Huntley & Palmers, the diverse and respected Glasgow/London club night, has offered their first release to the producer. A warm and drowsy vocal introduces "Highlife." But within seconds of the human welcome, a tribal rattle of drums comes in alongside a bouncing and probing bass. Hypnotic, playful and powerful, the track is snakecharmed by the snare before a momentary break. You're then greeted by a memorable "LaLaLaLa" chant. Such is the ritualistic effect of "Highlife" that it's little wonder the likes of Villalobos and Jackmaster have given it airings over the past few months. "Goa" is more tropical, a twisted late night blend of funky kwaitoesque drum rhythm, double handclaps and occasional roaring electronic stabsba zippy foot shuffling number ideal for the beginning or end to the night.
