Subeena - Wrong for Me

  • Subeena's tracks have always been difficult to classify, smudged with IDM influences that peek through in the most clouded, forlorn memories. But where once you might have filed her comfortably in the dubstep section, her latest efforts—and those of her OPIT label itself—have splintered and stretched out to uncharted territories. The fastest track on her latest EP is a mere 120 BPM. They lazily progress, expanding outward like fractals: it's impossible to tell where new elements begin and if you try to look closer, you'll just find infinitesimal iterations stretching back forever. This slow, methodical progression works wonders for "Wrong for Me," a vocal track that corrects whatever slight errors her now past vocal debut ("Neurotic") might have committed, and prioritizes a slow unfurling embrace of chimes, whirring organs and roving sub-bass that sensually feels its way around corners. Her vocal provides a suitably loungey, almost jazzy vibe that cleverly complements the woozy atmosphere. "End of Reason," meanwhile, is a surprisingly throbbing breakbeat techno tune, cluttered with ugly debris and atonal vocal samples and completed with an emergent chugging acid bassline that almost instantly shorts the track out completely. The EP is rounded off by "Space of Flow," a hesitant number that lets loose a harsh and rippling growl, the track tearing itself in two as sounds leak out of the rift zones.
