Estroe vs Duplex - Waiting for the Rollercoaster

  • The title Late Night Driving, Duplex's 2006 debut LP on Clone, and the fact that fellow Rotterdam denizen and friend Estroe has been supported by Digweed and Garnier over the years, might give you an idea of what happens when the duo gets together in the studio. It's unfussily rich and melodic, but with fussy production where it counts. Estroe's fully digital EevoNext imprint states a mission of quality and playability; one that's backed up by this EP. What's most apparent is the finesse: the polished and sombre chords soar throughout, and the percussion is delicately poised, whether it's along the lines of thickly melodic Detroit electro ("Quirky Detroit"), punchy, spaced-out house ("I Can't Wait"), delay-drenched, end-of-time downtempo ("Emotional Rollercoaster") or shuffley deep house (the Duplex remix). They honour the playability factor partly by stopping short of giving themselves up completely to whichever emotion they're respectively feeling. This saves on the excitement, yet there's enough that draws you in—rather than the other way around—to earn the listener's respect.
