Kerri Chandler - Ozone EP

  • Like an aging lothario who's just scored again, I imagine Kerri Chandler looking at himself in the mirror after making an EP like this and saying, "Still got it!" Could other members of the East Coast old guard say the same? Robocop-wannabe, Roger Sanchez? Trance diva, Romanthony? Chandler might not have diversified much throughout his career, but he's obviously familiar with the rule of thumb about fixing things that aren't broken. The "it" that he's still got is, of course, the funk. Even the release's middling tracks like dubby opener, "From Day One," or the noodling "My Moody Life" possess rhythmic pizzazz in an old-fashioned, manually-programmed sense, lifting the respective melodic simplicity and over-indulgence into an undeniable groove. That's the respectable minimum you can expect from the Jersey veteran, but he's certainly still capable of more, namely "13 to 41" and "Peace of my Mind." Both the Atmosphere-redolent filter on the former and the Gypsymen-style stomp of the latter sound like authentic originals by an old master who's still very much doing his thing.
