Baobinga & Hyetal - Anything for Now

  • Where will Bristolian bass wunderkind Baobinga find himself next? Sam Simpson's latest strange bedfellow is Hyetal, last seen mincing reverb-heavy booming '80s drums with Bristol's "purple" dubstep sound a la Joker and Guido. Their partnership is a rather inspired one: Baobinga's boisterous meat-and-potatoes percussion and sub-basslines send Hyetal's colourful tangents over the hill into decadent excess. "Anything for Now" moves with a distinct skip in its step, bleepy synths lagging behind the beat as it's rubbed to death by a repetitive two-note refrain. The track is a treasure trove of synth sounds: arpeggios curl, crushed bass frequencies growl, analogue textures envelope. "Trouble," meanwhile, is all about the ass-shaking as Hyetal's synths burst and spiral out of whatever gaps they can find, eventually dominating just like the flipside. Hyetal's recent material has shown him emphasizing more restraint in the name of elegant songwriting. As a result, it's nice to hear Simpson giving Hyetal a bit of room to jam. Let's be honest: the world could use a little jamming on synthesizers every now and again.
