Timos & Paris Liamis - For the Funky

  • For the Funky is a strictly Frankfurt affair in terms of personnel. Timos and Paris Liamis are in charge of the Offenbach label, Sonido, and invite neighbours Arto Mwambé and Julian Smith to remix and sing respectively. The latter's faux-Prince vocal turn on "Hey Hoe" provides an ear-catching highlight on a record that neither surprises nor disappoints in its provision of party-tune decency. The title track makes good its promise to cater to those of a certain disposition. Its bassline, which taps no more than three notes, is an archetypal reminder of house music's most fundamental cornerstones: simplicity and efficacy. The hi-hats gesture about like a conductor commanding the dance floor—a job which falls to vocalist, Smith, on the b-side. His boudoir falsetto call to "come on and get your ass over here" just might be the most inviting offer you receive all night. With a stocky, bump 'n' grind bass and a pair of tension-building breaks, there's little reason to pass it up. And are those horse noises I hear in Arto Mwambé's remix? Whatever they are, there's something weird happening over the top of a routinely spotless arrangement from the duo. Which is nice.
