Midnight Savari - Pinisi

  • It's always nice being surprised by a B-side. And Indonesia-based producer Ken Adhitya will surprise most with the workability of "Rimshots," the flip on his debut Pinisi 12-inch for young Sydney imprint Death Strobe Records. Title track "Pinisi" doesn't stray too far from the usual nu disco referents, with sweeping pads, warped bass and a subtle piano roll finale. Flip the vinyl over, however, and it's a different story. "Rimshots" is everything the opener isn't: loud, abrupt and brutal. The fact that there's relatively little to dissect sonically is a testament to Adhitya's ability to construct an enjoyable groove with the aid of only a short synth loop, a simple 808 kick-snare combo, chopped vocals and some reverb. While it may come off at first as just another retro disco jam to add to your crate, labeling it that alone would be an injustice. It's rare that a cut with a basis in throwback disco has the grunt to be a genuine weapon, but despite never exceeding 120 BPM this one has the potential to do a lot of damage.
